Suitable Raw Materials for Activated Carbon Rotary Kilns:
Advantages of AGICO Industrial Kilns
Split-System Process Design
AGICO addresses two distinct processes: “carbonization” and “activation.” We have designed different kiln structures, refractory linings, and temperature control systems.
Finished Product Pass Rate: 95%
The raw material continuous rolling in the kiln. Avoid over-firing or under-firing the raw materials. This improves the quality of the finished product.
Temperature Control System
Multi-point temperature measurement and automatic combustion control. Precise temperature control for different reaction stages. Compatible with multiple raw materials.
High-Grade Refractory Lining
The service life of the refractory lining is 18–24 months. The frequency of downtime maintenance has been reduced.
Consumption: 1.1–1.4 GJ/t
Activated carbon thermal consumption: 1.1–1.4 GJ/t. Furthermore, it supports the recovery and utilization of flue gas waste heat.
Low Failure Rate
The support rollers, thrust rollers, and transmission system have undergone optimized design. It is suitable for continuous operation and has a low failure rate.
Types of Activated Carbon Kilns
Carbonization Kiln
Carbonization is the pretreatment stage in the production of activated carbon. It removes non-carbon elements from the raw material through pyrolysis. Discharge tar, wood vinegar, and moisture from the raw materials. AGICO’s carbonization kiln features a professional sealing design. The entry of air is strictly prohibited to prevent the material from burning directly into ash during the carbonization process. Materials that have undergone carbonization exhibit an increased carbon content and a compact structure.
- Temperature: 400–700°C
- Atmosphere: Oxygen-free / Low-oxygen
- Residence Time: 30–60 min
- Kiln Speed: 0.5–2 rpm
Activation Kiln
The activation kiln is the key equipment to determining the quality of activated carbon. It injects high-temperature steam or CO₂ into the kiln. Undergoes an oxidation reaction with carbon atoms. The interior of AGICO’s activation kiln is lined with special high-alumina refractory bricks. The kiln body features multiple steam nozzles, ensuring thorough contact between the activating agent and the carbon material. The produced activated carbon achieves an iodine value of 800–1200 mg/g.
- Temperature: 850–1000°C
- Medium: Steam / CO₂
- Residence Time: 40–90 min
- Steam Flow: Precisely controlled ratio via PLC
Process Flow of the Activated Carbon Rotary Kiln
- Raw Material Processing: Before entering the activated carbon rotary kiln, the raw materials must be crushed using a limestone crusher. It typically ranges from 5 to 20 mm. And the moisture content must be ≤ 15%. Ensure uniform calcination within the kiln and high calcination efficiency.
- Carbonization Stage: The material enters from the kiln tail and moves towards the kiln head. Entering the oxygen-deficient carbonization zone. The temperature gradually rises, and the temperature inside the kiln is between 400°C and 700°C. The residence time is 30–60 minutes. The material undergoes thermal decomposition. Fixed carbon content increases. Primary pores form.
- Activation Stage: Activation stage is the key stage in determining the quality of activated carbon. At high temperatures, an activator is injected into the kiln. The reaction temperature is 850–1000°C. The residence time is 40–90 minutes. The activator undergoes an oxidation reaction with the carbon atoms on the surface of the carbon particles.
- Cooling Stage: The activated high-temperature charcoal is discharged through the kiln head. Enter the cooler to cool down to below 60°C.
- Screening and Packaging: Use a circular vibrating screen or a linear vibrating screen to classify the finished products. Remove powder and substandard particles. Then, it is packaged.
- Exhaust Gas Treatment: The flue gas generated during carbonization and activation requires dust removal using a baghouse dust collector, an industrial cyclone dust collector, or an esp electrostatic precipitator. Exhaust gas is discharged after meeting compliance standards. Waste heat is recovered and utilized.
AGICO offers Two Mature Rotary Kiln solutions for Activated Carbon Production:
——AGICO recognizes that different clients have varying requirements regarding investment budgets, production capacities, and product quality. Therefore, we offer two different activated carbon kiln solutions to help customers make the optimal choice.
Economical Single-Kiln
Economical single kiln solution is through the segmented temperature control design of an activated carbon kiln, carbonization and activation are carried out within the kiln. Small footprint. Simple to operate. Short construction cycle. Equipment investment is reduced by 30–40%.
- Suitable for production by small and medium-sized enterprises.
- Small-scale capacity requirements: 1–5 t/d.
- Requires a high level of operational experience.
- The quality of the raw materials is relatively uniform.
High-Efficiency Dual-Kiln Tandem System
It adopts a design that combines a professional carbonization kiln and a professional activation kiln. Temperature and atmosphere are controlled independently, resulting in more stable product quality. Highly automated, with minimal human intervention. Energy consumption per ton reduced by 15–25%, and finished product pass rate is ≥95%.
- Suitable for large-scale enterprise production.
- Medium-to-Large Capacity: 5–30 t/d.
- There are stable requirements for iodine value, specific surface area, and pore structure.
- Suitable for complex raw materials.
Why is it Recommended to use Rotary Kiln for Activated Carbon Production?
In all activated carbon heat treatment equipment, the activated carbon rotary kiln is the best suited for industrialized, continuous production. The activated carbon rotary kiln has become the preferred solution for medium-to-large-scale activated carbon plants worldwide. Compared to other kilns, the activated carbon rotary kiln is suitable for multiple raw materials and capable of continuous operation. For enterprises that pursue stable quality, large-scale production, and low energy consumption, the activated carbon rotary kiln is the most mature and reliable choice.
